I enrolled in the class academic and business writing of EDX so that I can improve my writing skills ahead of starting my MBA in two months from now. For this class it was advised to get a learning Journal, so why not a blog for this matter?
so here we are together in this journey.
Below my first week assignment on: “Think about the type of writing you do in your daily life, especially in English. Do you write for fun? For your job? For school?”
It is safe to say that for the recent years that I do most business writing than academic writing. Business writing is a most for all professionals, sending emails for example is one that I do mechanically. We have been doing it so often that it become natural to do so. In addition to sharing a plethora of email on a daily, I also use other forms of business writing contents such as executive summary, slides presentation, report and pitches.
I like writing when I feel knowledgeable about the topic, for instance marketing which I am passionate about and which is my area of expertise. So, when the opportunity presents itself for this kind of topic, the words come easily, and I get inspired to get buy in from my readers. However, I dread writing in some instances where I don’t master what I need to write about. There are some reports which I don’t enjoy doing due to lack of data sometimes or only just because they are far less interesting than presenting ideas.
If I must assess my business writing skills, I can say that I am a correct writer. Working in face past company, one thing about my daily business writing is that I strive to be as concise and clear as possible putting myself in the receivers’ shoes. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for my academic writing skills as this has been a while since I had such opportunity. In my university years I did all my academic writings in French as opposed to now where all my business writings are in English, and I only speak French 20% of the time. Henceforth, I aspire to be better in both genres, focusing on my academic for now as I will be undertaking my master’s in business administration in a few months.
